The Bozeman Police Department's sworn officers are organized into Patrol and Detective divisions who work together on crime prevention and incestigation. The Patrol Division works in three shifts patrolling and responding to calls. The Detective Division is comprised of specially trained officers who primarily investigate felony and complex misdemenanor crimes.

The schedule allows for generous days off, as officers work four consecutive10 hour shifts for six months, based on seniority. All uniforms and equipment are provided by the department at no cost to the officer. Many collateral opportunities to aid in the officers’ development to include K-9, Special Response Team, Crisis Negotiator Team, Detectives, Drug Task Force, Crisis Intervention Team, Mountain Bike, Motorcycle, Traffic Enforcement, School Resource Officer, DARE, Firearms Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Taser Instructor, Drug Recognition Expert, Crash Investigation, Domestic Violence Trainer, Computer Crimes against Children, Handwriting Analysis, and progressive training offered at all levels.
Benefits include a salary range of $44,000 for entry level officers up to $49,000 for lateral officers, depending on experience; no residency requirements to live within a certain distance of the department; the potential of an accelerated Field Training Evaluation Program for lateral officers; medical, dental, vision, and disability for officers; a flexible benefits plan (medical/dependent child care); paid vacation, sick, compensatory time and holidays; a 20 year retirement system; a deferred compensation plan; and a health club membership at a discounted rate.
Located in southwestern Montana, Bozeman is a community-oriented atmosphere with a mix of small-town charm and urban amenities, economic opportunity, and gorgeous natural scenery. Home to three skiing resorts in the area, with plenty of hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, mountain biking, rafting, and hiking. Bozeman is only 90 minutes from Yellowstone National Park, 4 hours to the Grand Tetons and 5 hours to Glacier National Park. Bozeman is a growing community with a population of nearly 40,000 residents, making it the fourth largest city in Montana.
