SPECIAL ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY
HINDS COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE
SEVENTH CIRCUIT COURT DISTRICT
JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI


Job Description:
A Special Assistant District Attorney to the Hinds County District Attorney serves as legal fellow 
to the Hinds County District Attorney’s Office and devotes their entire time and attention to the 
duties pertaining to the Office of the Hinds County District Attorney, as required by the 
constitution and general laws of the State of Mississippi. The core duties of a Hinds County Special 
Assistant District Attorney include reviewing and analyzing allegations of criminal violations; 
developing strategies for investigations; coordinating with Mississippi law enforcement agencies 
to ensure that cases are investigated thoroughly and effectively; developing testimonial and 
documentary evidence relevant to cases; presenting evidence to Hinds County Grand Juries; 
identifying relevant legal issues in cases and investigations; recommending for or against 
prosecution; preparing and presenting cases for prosecution, to include: preparing grand jury 
testimony, prosecution summaries, and indictment recommendations; preparing indictments, 
motions, pleadings, and briefs; conducting pretrial discovery and motions practice; developing 
testimonial and documentary evidence for trial; and conducting every aspect of trial preparation 
and trial presentation in the Hinds County Circuit Court in both the First and Second Judicial 
Districts of Hinds County, Mississippi. Additionally, a Hinds County Special Assistant District 
Attorney represents the Office of the Hinds County District Attorney in local County, Municipal
and Justice Courts.


Term:
The Special Assistant District Attorney position is a one-year entry level position with the Hinds 
County District Attorney’s Office commencing on January 1, 2022, and concluding on December 
31, 2022. The Special Assistant District Attorney position is designed to provide successful 
applicants with an opportunity to develop criminal trial practice skills, acquaint them with the 
complexities inherent in the prosecution of violent criminal felonies, and prepare them for a career 
as a criminal prosecutor. Successful applicants who complete the one-year term as a Special 
Assistant District Attorney are strongly encouraged to seek permanent employment with the Hinds 
County District Attorney’s Office as a full-time state prosecutor.



Requirements

Qualifications: 

A) Required Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a J.D. from an American Bar Association accredited law school and be 
an active member of the Mississippi Bar in good standing. Applicants also must have strong, 
demonstrated qualifications in the following areas: academic achievement; written and oral 
communication skills; the ability to analyze complex issues; skill and experience working 
collaboratively and productively with others; organizational skills; professional judgment; 
initiative; and the ability to excel in a fast-paced, demanding environment.


B) Preferred Qualifications:
The following qualifications are preferred, but not required: (1) criminal or civil jury trial 
experience; (2) criminal or civil litigation experience; (3) experience with criminal investigations. 
Other preferred qualifications include judicial clerkships, law review, moot court, clinical 
experience, and skills and experience working cooperatively and productively with a range of 
people, such as charging parties, witnesses, respondents, opposing counsel, judicial or 
administrative officials, advocacy groups, law enforcement personnel, and other federal or state 
governmental agencies.
