Description

The Fleet Services Division is an Internal Service Fund that provides preventative and prescriptive maintenance for approximately 1,300 County vehicles and other pieces of specialized equipment. Fleet Services provides full vehicle maintenance services, including assistance with vehicle acquisition, vehicle registration, preventative maintenance, accident management, vehicle repair, motor pool, fuel card lock program, and salvage/auction services. Fleet Services complies with State and Federal regulatory requirements including vehicle smog inspection, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) vehicle safety standards, and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hazardous waste standards. These activities are funded through fees that are charged to client departments and customers. The division operates on an annual budget of approximately $5.0 million.

Fleet includes a wide variety of vehicles including sedans, vans, sport utility vehicles, trucks including general duty, heavy duty, and box trucks, police rated pursuit sedans/sports utility vehicles/trucks/motorcycles, as well as transport vans/shuttles. In addition, our fleet includes off-road vehicles, boats, jet skis, dirt bikes, carts (electric and gas) and trailers. The Sheriff’s Department is Fleet Services largest customer and accounts for approximately 75% of the work volume which includes special vehicle customization (“upfitting”) for law enforcement purposes.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong background in fleet services management, is an experienced professional who has exceptional leadership, creativity, and interpersonal skills, and possesses broad experience in administration, budget, fiscal, and operations. This individual will be an excellent communicator, will develop and present complex information to multiple audiences, will thrive in an environment focused on innovation, and will meet the needs of the operating departments by delivering excellent customer service at a reasonable cost.

This individual will direct, manage, plan and organize a fleet management program including procurement, utilization, repair, maintenance, fueling, operation and disposition of County vehicles and specialized equipment. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to resolve difficult situations using diplomacy and tact. The successful candidate must demonstrate knowledge of fleet management software, fleet management benchmarking, establishment of equipment rental rates, and have a proven track record of managing and balancing an internal service fund budget. The ideal candidate should be familiar with State and Federal mandates regarding smog and alternative fueled vehicles. The successful candidate must also demonstrate the ability to manage the fleet operations including the motor pool in an efficient manner and be familiar with state-of-the-art maintenance techniques and equipment.

Requirements

Manager II –

  • Bachelor's degree in Automotive Technology, Business Administration, or a related field; related experience as stated below, may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis; AND
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible full-time supervisory experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive, construction, or industrial equipment. Supervisory experience must reflect responsibility for the full range of supervisory duties including planning and scheduling the work of employees, employee selection, training, evaluation, commendations, and discipline.

Manager III –

  • Bachelor's degree in Automotive Technology, Business Administration, or a related field; related experience as stated below, may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis; AND
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible full-time supervisory experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive, construction, or industrial equipment. Supervisory experience must reflect responsibility for the full range of supervisory duties including planning and scheduling the work of employees, employee selection, training, evaluation, commendations, and discipline.

Desirable Qualifications 

  • Two (2) years experience in managing and procuring automotive, construction, and/or industrial equipment for a City/County government or a commercial fleet; OR
  • Experience using a major fleet management information software system such as Asset Works or Fleet Anywhere/Faster/SAP; OR
  • Experience with alternative fuels, zero or low emissions vehicles and automotive sustainability; OR
  • Possession of any Automotive Service Excellence Certifications (ASEs); OR
  • Possession of one (1) of the following certifications:
  • ASE Certified Master Automobile Technician; OR
  • Certified Automotive Fleet Specialist (CAFS); OR
  • Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM) or awarded from National Association of Fleet Administrators (NAFA) or equivalent.
