Compensation: 

  • Six Step Salary Range is $32.01 - $40.88 per hour.
  • Salary range placement is dependent on the candidate’s qualifications.
  • No Fringe Benefits.

Position Overview: 

The School Resource Officer position classification is under the direction of a Sergeant, while serving the City and community at large by performing a variety of peace officer duties involving the protection of life and property and enforcement of laws and ordinances of the City and State government. Provides assistance and protection to residents through the execution of a program of community policing that includes education and crime prevention, investigation, and suppression activities. Prepares cases and provides testimony in court proceedings on behalf of the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Patrols assigned areas to ensure security of life and property, observes situations and deters crimes.
  • Obtains information on police-related issues.
  • Responds to suspicious activities and answers emergency calls for service at assigned school sites.
  • Enforces a variety of City, County, State, and Federal laws and ordinances, issues verbal warnings and citations.
  • Pursues and apprehends suspects and requests assistance.
  • Conducts limited drug and alcohol testing.
  • Investigates criminal activity and incidents.
  • Investigates traffic accidents and provides traffic control.
  • Restores order, protects life and property, and maintains the peace.
  • Conducts surveillance and searches.
  • Develops contacts and resources.
  • Participates in collateral police activities.
  • Specializes in particular investigative areas, e.g. sex crimes, juveniles, drugs and narcotics, etc.
  • Develops investigative expertise, contacts, and methodology.
  • Prepares and documents investigations and daily activities and records a variety of crimes and incident reports.
  • Documents all school-related conducts/crimes.
  • May participate in sessions designated to promote positive behavior.
  • Highly visible on and around the campus and/or the community where students assemble, drive, walk or arrive onto campus property.
  • Prepares and maintains logs and records.
  • Testifies on behalf of the City in court.
  • Speaks to various constituencies for the Department.
  • Responds to medical and fire calls, and provides emergency aid, assistance and requests additional response until arrival of an ambulance/paramedics.
  • Maintains issued, assigned, and personally provided equipment.
  • Operates a motor vehicle.
  • Interacts with the public in a professional and courteous manner, answers basic questions, provides direction and responds to calls for service and assistance, and refers the public and their questions to appropriate City employees.
  • Enforces Delano Joint Union High School District policies and rules.
  • Assists Delano Joint Union High School District staff when making home visits.
  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned.


Requirements

Education and Experience: 

  • High School Diploma, or an equivalent certificate recognized by the State of California.
  • Associate’s Degree with emphasis in criminology, law enforcement/administration of justice, political science, social or behavioral science or a related field, preferred.
  • One year of experience in law enforcement as a peace officer with a Police or Sheriff  Department in a full-time or reserve capacity desired.
  • Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate is required.
  • Maintain a valid California Drivers License with a driving record acceptable to the City.
