Job Description Summary:
To perform general firefighting work, responding to calls for emergency service and to perform related work as required. Position consists of technical work in the prevention, control, and suppression of structural and non-structural fires. Responds to fire and rescue calls, suppresses fires, and renders emergency medical assistance while on scene. Operates fire rescue equipment. Reports to the highest-ranking command officer and functions on a shift, 24-hour duty day, averaging 50.4 work week.
Essential Job Duties.
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Performs firefighting activities including laying hose, performing fire suppression (containing and extinguishing fires). Create openings in buildings for ventilation and entrance.
- Protects property from smoke and water damage using positive pressure ventilation, salvage covers, smoke ejectors and deodorants.
- Administers emergency medical aid activities including to injured persons and those overcome by fire and smoke.
- Participates in training/drills, demonstrations, and courses in firefighting techniques, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
- Operates radios and other communication equipment.
- Adheres to departmental policies and procedures; ensures compliance with all federal and state regulations. Must attend required training and meetings as deemed appropriate.
- Assist with pre-fire planning and prevention.
- Performs duties in a manner consistent with safe practices and policies.
- Maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and department facilities.
- Operates a fire engine and motor vehicle; utilizes all fire suppression equipment, hand and power tools, grounds keeping and housekeeping equipment, first aid supplies and various office machines.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the Fire Chief, other fire departments other emergency response agencies, law enforcement agencies, coworkers, volunteers and the public.
- Perform other related duties as required.

- May serve as a member of various employee committees.
- Assist in training new employees as assigned.
- May instruct classes in assigned subject areas.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to apply standard firefighting, emergency medical services, hazardous material and fire prevention techniques.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks during emergencies, training or station activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of heights, heat, smoke and adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public.
- Maintains required certifications and licensures.
- Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment, such as fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses, self-contained-breathing apparatus, other firefighting equipment and computers.
Requirements:
- Must be 18 years or older at time of employment.
- Requires a high school diploma or GED.
- Must possess a valid Michigan Driver’s License.
- Must provide current resume.
- Firefighter I & II of the Michigan State Firefighters Training Council.
- Applicants must provide Minimum State of Michigan EMT-Basic or higher license or valid National Registry Basic level or higher certificate at time of application.
- Applicant that submitted National Registry certificate must provide State of Michigan EMT-Basic or higher licensure by.
- Must have valid Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) at the date of hire.
- Pass a written test as provided by Empco
- Must Pass Background Investigation.
- Must Pass Medical Examination include physical, vision, hearing, drug screen & psychological evaluation.

Work is performed primarily in the field, vehicles, outdoor settings, in all weather conditions, including temperatures extremes (hot and cold), during day and nighttime. Work is often performed in emergency situations were visibility (darkness) is impaired. Employee may be exposed to loud noises and hazardous conditions associated with firefighting, including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, solvents, oils, and rendering emergency medical services with potential exposure to blood or air borne pathogens and communicable diseases. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places.
