Accident/Incident Investigator
Accident/Incident investigators are responsible for reviewing and investigating accidents, incidents, and customer complaints to determine their nature and cause, including crashes, customer complaints and workplace injuries. Position will include assisting in development of safety measures to mitigate future accidents/incidents. Attention to detail and a high level of critical thinking are necessary for examining reports, and video camera systems. This position must possess a high level of confidentiality for sensitive information and may be called upon to appear for legal matters as they pertain to incidents/accidents.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Examine evidence to determine details of occurrence, and the root cause of accidents.
- Collect all pertinent information and specific details as to the occurrence, including details prior to and directly after the event, as well as any other relevant details.
- Determine whether laws, company policies or regulations were violated that resulted in the incident/accident.
- Prepare detailed reports that include information about the accident circumstances, findings of fact, conclusions, and recommendations for preventing future similar accidents/incidents.
- Testify (as needed) as a witness in accident investigation or video retention for court.
- Review on-board video camera software and review customer complaints and other reported incidents.
- Review facility camera software to review reported incidents occurring on Metro property.
- Maintains records and reports of all accidents and incidents on METRO property and vehicles.
- Complete other related reports needed to conduct investigation and reports for other agencies and community partners.
- Maintain an accident database, documenting all accident-related information.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external departments regarding incidents.
- Support Transportation and Operation staff in accident investigation when needed during major accident/incidents involving Metro assets.
- Ability to work independently on site and in the field.
- Ability to work in compliance with Metro's policies.
- Ability to be on-call for after-hours incidents.
- Other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education
- Bachelor's Degree in a Safety discipline, or related field of study preferred OR
- At least five (5) years of accident, criminal or insurance investigation experience.
Experience
- Federal, State and Local safety regulations and laws.
- Report writing
- Evidence collection
- Investigation techniques
- Video surveillance
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Computer Skills
- Microsoft, SharePoint, and other related software abilities.
Certificates & Licenses
- Legal background and/or
- Investigative certifications (Law Enforcement or Accident Reconstruction) preferred.
Other Requirements
- Valid Driver's License Required.
- Knowledge of Ohio traffic laws and court procedures.
- Ability to work well under pressure.
- Excellent communications skills (verbal and written).
- Good interpersonal skills during diverse situations.
- Strong negotiation skills.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Office atmosphere, when needed field work.
